So watch out for glimpses of our new accessories made from vintage scarves and see you soon.
Well, having been forced to take a break from creating bags for a while, I have been given to the opportunity to step back and review "stuff" and I can report it has been great and very productive. Its given me chance to look at myself, what I do, how I do it and how I want to move forward in the future. I can't wait to get back into the business come Oct and bring forward new things and new ideas. Oh, I haven't been idle, far from it, I have made massive discoveries and found something new in my life...........the art of Mosiac!!!! I cannot believe how much I love creating Mosaics!! Since I went on a workshop and was inspired by a wonderful teacher Muni, its been my default setting! When times have been challenging, I will immerse myself in Mosiac-ing, its been my meditation, my mindfulness, its been my life saver, apart from family and friends of course. As I said I haven't been idle, we have been producing some fantastic accessories to go with our beautiful bags. (I will post some pictures on FB shortly). I have a new design for a bag which will be available before Christmas, so, all very exciting. My love and excitement in discovering beautiful vintage scarves and giving them a new life is unending, I love the idea that the piece of fabric I hold gives a real glimpse of what like was like in the 40s/50s/60s/70s. It weaves its magic with the tantalising stories that come into my head, who needs to search for Pokeman (what is that anyway?) when those items of fashion history hold all that energy and whats more they are real!!!
So watch out for glimpses of our new accessories made from vintage scarves and see you soon.
Sitting here in my wonderful studio/workshop/factory/sweatshop in my garden with the door open, birds singing and I'm thinking I'm pretty lucky. My walk to work is literally 5secs, yes really................step out the back door and then into the my workplace. All my visitors love my space, yeah its pretty messy but then we produce wonderful work in here.
I got to thinking that it was a good reward for me, to be able to work all day in this wonderful space, but is it? Do we reward ourselves enough for what we do each day, not only at work but in our homes, with our families. Now, you may wonder where this ramble is going.....its come about by listening to people at the design/craft shows we attend to sell our bags, and, by looking at peoples shopping habits. Women, and I can only talk about women 'cos I am one! I am sure, (well I'm not really) that men probably feel the same, but, this blog is based on me being a woman and looking at women's shopping habits. rambling now.... Well, most people love what we make and would love to buy one, but some say Oh no I couldn't spend that on myself!!!! Really?? Its not only about our bags, but about lots of makers, example: there are some beautiful jewellery pieces out there, some very talented makers. I have literally seen ladies really admire a piece, put it down and say, Oh no too much money. Its actually not that the piece is too much money but that we don't value ourselves enough to gift ourselves! The fact is that I have seen those very same people go on to another stall and proceed to spend a small fortune on stuff for their house or their kids! Great, if that makes you happy but everybody needs to value themselves and deserve a reward for all the things they do. So go buy yourself something nice to value yourselves, maybe one of our lovely unique bags!!!!!! Think of it this way...if you are buying a BackThenBag you are not only buying a unique designer piece but an heirloom, and you pass those onto your kids !! Ha ha
Funny title, I know but it came to me yesterday when we were showing at Castle Ashby Gardens in Northampton. It was a wonderful show with so many wonderfully talented craftspeople. I really like speaking to people who are genuinely interested in our bags and the history behind each of them. Occasionally, we get the one person who challenges me about "cutting up scarves" blah blah... I had one such person yesterday, challenging me and asking me questions, then wasn't listening when I replied, in fact just talked over me! Which I suppose is fine, but very strange as he wasn't a collector of scarves or really had any interest, he just wanted to be provocative, we are all entitled to our own opinions of course, but that usually means you listen to the opposing opinion and not just close off!!!
Yes I do "cut up vintage scarves" but I do that with integrity and with the intention of giving it a new life. Owners can use them, give them new adventures and enjoy the beautiful designs and colours of something which may have just been shoved into a draw never seeing the light of day!!
Some of the vintage scarves I buy have experience marks on them, some have blooming great holes, so to recycle them is a wonderful way to be able to use them again but in a different way. Some of our customers have had their precious memory scarves reborn into a bag and been so happy to be able to have something they can use and have new adventures with.
I wonder if people who modify cars or who give old furniture a new life suffer from the same criticism from people who just don't "get it".
Oh well. I love what I do, the energy around each one of our bags and I alos love it when people just get it. They are my kind of folk.
I think we can definitely say that Spring has sprung and summer plans are coming together. Lots of parties and weddings, happy times. The BackThenBgas team are hard at work putting together lots of bags created from carefully selected vintage scarves not only in traditional colours but of course those more vibrant, quirky bags that BackThenBags are becoming renowned for. The ones that make you go "Ooooo"...... you know those bags that make you stand out from a crowd. Each of our unique bags has its own energy, its very own story.

What a combination!
There has been so much that has happened since our last blog. We have an App- BackThenBags, which is free from the App store, it keeps you more up to date with whats happening and has a lot of our bags in it store. We also have an Etsy shop which again has many different bags for sale as well as our new lampshades and doggies bandannas, a must have. the name is BackThenBagsShop, for Etsy. We are also on twitter @thenbags. We are still buying fantastic vintage scarves, all with fabulous stories to tell. Part of the beauty of these vintage scarves for us is the energy that they have, stories of secrets and adventures. this is why we craft them into bags and charge our customers with taking them onto have new adventures. There is nothing I like more than coming into my studio every morning to work, opening my store cupboard to select the scarf that is singing that morning!
What a job!
We are currently undergoing even more exciting changes so will keep you all up to date
I met a very nice lady at The St Albans show and she very nicely told me how to see if a Hermes scarf was "real" or not. Now the scarf in question was obviously real, but I felt something wasn't quite right about it, let alone the price! the seller wanted £45 which is cheap cheap cheap for a Hermes. She told me she could get much more for it and if genuine she is right! The genuine Vintage Hermes scarves sell for well over £100. Well, the lady who I met had a look at it and said that it definitely wasn't genuine Hermes. She gave me a few pointers, there is always one side more vibrant than the other and the rolled edge is rolled towards that vibrant edge. Thats an instant giveaway the edge. Other stuff too, but really interesting.
thanks to all who came to see us at the Fabulous Grand Vintage Fair in St. Albans today. We had a great day and met some lovely people.
